Getting the Better of Blisters

Blisters occur because of three factors heat, moisture and friction. What tends to happen is your feet get hot and sweaty which causes your socks to stick to your feet causing your foot sock and the inside of your shoes to rub together causing a blister to form. Blisters can also Form as a result of fungal infections on the skin, allergic reactions or burns.

PREVENTION

A good comfortable pair of well fitting shoes well help prevent blisters. If you are prone to blisters then a good pair of synthetic wool socks will help as they will allow your feet to breath and not bunch up as much as cotton socks. A good over the counter antiperspirant is a good idea as keeping your feet dry is a third of the battle. Another option is foot lubricants as these help prevent chafing and reduce friction.

TREATMENT

In most cases blisters heal naturally and do not require specialist attention. The body will re-absorb the fluid and the blister will dry and peel off. The skin that forms on top of the blisters provides a natural defence to infection. Ideally you should not pierce a blister with a needle but allow it to heal naturally.

You could cover a blister with an adhesive dressing or gauze. If the blister is causing you pain, cover the area with a soft dressing and change the dressing daily. Once the blister bursts refrain from peeling the skin and cover the exposed skin with a dressing.

If a blister becomes infected, it will be very painful, swollen and possibly red. It is advisable to visit your doctor for a prescription of antibiotics ASAP.

If you are a hiker or long distance runner and are prone to blistering then take an emergency kit with you. This should contain water, antiseptic wipes or spray and a sterile needle. Although it is not advised to pierce the blister if you have no other choice then the following steps should help and minimise the chance of infections. Ensure your hands and the blister is clean by using antiseptic wipes. Insert the sterilized needle into the side or bottom of the blister to allow it to drain, rolling the needle over it will ensure the liquid is squeezed out. Once the liquid has been drained out clean the affected area using the antiseptic making sure you do not break or move the skin. Cover the blister with over the counter medication.
